Agricultural varieties are often of non-British origin and the result of plant breeding selection.  They differ from the corresponding wild forms, usually being more robust, vigorous, and showing poor long term persistence.  Amenity varieties are generally closer in form to the wild types, but are usually of non-British origin.

Red and white clover are natural components of many ancient meadows and grasslands and are particularly important as pollen and nectar sources for bumblebees.  Clovers (especially cultivated forms) are not generally recommended for inclusion in wild flower meadow mixtures, as their ability to fix nitrogen tends to push the sward to a more fertile grassy condition, creating management difficulties and loss of diversity.  Clovers sown with lawn and grazing mixtures, however, can be beneficial.  Wild clover sown into a lawn (at 0.2 - 1g per square metre) can produce a sward that is more tolerant of wear and stays green without the need for feeding and watering.  Relaxed mowing during the summer will allow the production of flower heads for bees.

Kent wild white clover is a small leaved native variety which is very long lasting under a tight mowing or grazing regime.

Agricultural red clover varieties tend to be short lived but can produce a useful pollen source for a few years after sowing.
